Introduction to Writing and Publishing About WP Writing Academy The Wilhite Publishing Writing Academy consists of information and resources for all writers--beginners to experienced, published and not yet published. In addition to writing in general the focus of the Academy is on writing and publishing digital books (e-books) for the consumer market in fiction as well as non-fiction. Since a major component of a viable e-book is multimedia, attention is given to working with media to be included in your digital publication. The Academy "courses" can be reached through the top navigation bar and are numbered by levels from 1 through 6. Ancillary sections in support of these courses, such as Forums and Research, are also included in the top navigation bar. A complete list of courses with brief descriptions and links is included in the Academy Catalog (forthcoming). A few words of orientation are in order to help you browse the site and hopefully return regularly to pursue the Academy courses that will prepare you for writing and publishing in the digital age. The principal content is, obviously, included in this center column that provides instruction and information. The left column consists of two navigation bars--the top one includes e-books published by Wilhite Publishing and will include your multimedia digital book if you decide to join the WP family of authors and if your topic meets our areas of interest as indicated by the titles given on each folder tab. The bottom bar on the left is the WP E-Store designed to offer products and services of interest to writers, digital writing, and items related to our areas of interest and expertise for editing and publishing. We felt that if you write an e-book for WP in the area of photography, home and garden, or Spanish, for example, you might also want to peruse products and services in those areas from what we hope will become your home, favorite, familiar, and trusted site for your writing endeavors. The right column includes ads and links to products and services. Most items are related to the focus of this site and/or to the topic of the page and consist primarily of books, software, and magazines useful for writing digital books. Many are repeated on subsequent pages as a convenience so that you don't have to browse back or search for items of interest. The links take you to further information rather than to a "shopping cart." Some links are direct downloads of free trial software; try before you buy whenever possible. Good digital writers can never have too many books or too much software! The top of each page includes the topic title and contents along with links to related pages of that course level. The bottom of the page includes navigation links as well for your convenience. Even the color scheme has been designed to guide you with reds primarily for information and greens for links to pages within the Academy or to products. The Art and Craft of Writing Take a seat; the Writing Academy begins now! What is publishable writing? What is creative writing versus informative writing? What are fiction and non-fiction? What about scripts and poetry? Am I a writer? Are others interested in what I write? Does writing a blog make me a potential e-book author? If you know the answers to those questions then feel free to skip to another section or page. Here we discuss a broad range of topics in "the art and craft of writing." What writing is and is not, writing for publication, writing for consumers, writing to entertain, writing to inform, and more are included. While the information in Level 2 and above is intended primarily for literate writers of publishable creative fiction and academic writers of non-fiction, all may find something of interest in the topics covered in the introductory material included in Level 1 of the Academy. This section is updated regularly; come back often to read more about The Art and Craft of Writing--> Improving Your Writing Skills Writing to inform and/or entertain is an art and a craft that requires knowledge, skill, and talent. The knowledge needed for publishable or viable writing includes knowledge of the subject matter (whether non-fiction or creative fiction) as well as knowledge of the tools used to create the subject matter--language, grammar, mechanics, usage, and style. Acquiring or expanding your knowledge of the subject matter--content or topic--is a matter of research and reading. And this applies to fiction as well as non-fiction. The ideas for your story taking place during a particular period in history may come from your imagination but establishing the framework for your story requires knowledge of that historical period. You acquired knowledge of the tools you use for writing in language classes in secondary school and/or college. But these were at a basic level for day-to-day survival in the world of written and spoken language. To take writing from the survival level to the art and craft of publishable, viable writing additional knowledge and skills are needed. Knowledge can be gained or expanded; skills can be acquired and practiced; talent is innate. The WP Writing Academy can help with the first two but as for talent--well, you either have it or you don't. But you no doubt have a penchant for writing or you wouldn't be on this site. And raw talent can be refined. If you studied advanced language classes, creative writing, journalism and so forth you are "good to go" and you may want to go to 101b E-Writing Intro for an introduction to writing digital e-books. Otherwise, you might continue browsing the information and resources in the 101a sections on writing in general. The topic of developing your skill as a writer is also elaborated upon frequently; return to class any time to learn more about Improving Your Writing Skills--> Tips and Techniques for Writers In addition to the information and resources you need for developing the art and craft of writing in general--language, grammar, style, reference, etc.--the guidance and tools used for the specific type of writing you do should be pursued. Improving writing skill in general with a focus on language and usage is essential. An important next step is to consider information, tips, and techniques for particular types of writing in different genres or categories. For example, fiction writers should read specific techniques for plot, character, setting and so forth in addition to studying language usage along with reading about general writing, fiction, novel or short story. This section includes frequent additions by WP staff and visitors like you. Come here often to read the latest Tips and Techniques for Writers--> Publishing and Selling Printed Books Publishing a nicely bound hardcover book is the dream of virtually all writers but that dream is often not realized, not because the book is not worthy but because the number of publishers and the quantity of books they can bring to press is limited. Many quality books do not make it to print because publishers and literary agents are "at capacity" in the number of manuscripts they can handle. Writers of publishable books cannot have their works read and considered under the circumstances. Digital publishing offers an alternative for getting your book before readers and, in fact, a means for writers to have their books noticed by print publishers in the process. Agents and publishers may not consider new and unpublished writers, but they will notice an e-book that is popular and selling well. Don't give up on your dream of seeing your book in print. To have your book published, selling, earning you money, in the hands of readers, and perhaps noticed by print publishers you may break into the print publishing world by writing and publishing in the digital age. Write your book as an e-book!
