Three easy steps to write, publish, and sell your e-book!
Step 1: The first step is to download and install the DeskTop Author software which is quite inexpensive (less than $150) and easy to use. Simply copy and paste your text into the program from virtually any document file or write within the program. As you are working with DTA you will quickly learn how to choose book cover and page templates, insert photos and other media if needed and more. You will "package" (that is, simply save) your work as a DNL file. That enables your book to be read on computers with a small file reader plug-in that users will download. DTA includes a feature to enable "digital rights management" (DRM) which means you control how many pages a potential buyer can read before prompted to pay online through a secure server (by eSellerate) as described in Step 2 below. The DNL/DRM feature is exclusive to DeskTop Author and eSellerate and is important to note since it allows a reader to browse a book before purchase just as they do in a bookstore. Most "publish on the web" opportunities you may have seen merely provide a brief description and/or a short passage, hardly enough to encourage a purchase. We recommend allowing substantial free pages, enough to "hook" the reader. An important feature of DRM is that your book may be passed along to others but when the book file is located on another computer eSellerate's DRM payment gateway is reactivated and new readers must pay to continue reading after the free pages. To further distribution and sales you can insert a clickable "email this e-book" button on any page(s) of your e-book but only the free pages will be available to those who receive it even if the sender has paid. You are protected from piracy, book swapping, file sharing. More samples are here. Step 2: When your e-book created with DeskTop Author is finished, the second step is to go to eSellerate and register as a publisher. They charge less than 15% of earnings, the exact amount depends on sales volume. eSellerate handles the payment gateway for your DRM enabled e-book collecting payments from purchasers and disbursing your earnings to you. You, of course, set the price of your e-book and we suggest that you make it reasonable. E-book versions of best-selling authors' books are available for as little as $10 for fiction so consider $10 to $15. Bear in mind that you can't think in terms of the cost of a paperback or hardcover book since there are no publisher's expenses (editing, printing, binding, shipping, etc.) that dictate the high price of printed books. The price you set for a non-fiction e-book (textbooks, manuals, etc.) may be higher and is dictated by the work involved in preparation and the value of the information it contains. In addition, eSellerate makes your e-book available to web site owners that might be interested in becoming affiliates that advertise and sell it. You can set blanket automatic permission for any interested web site but we suggest that you require publisher (your) approval so that you can check out the web sites and make sure they are appropriate for your work. You determine the percentage to be paid to affiliates and to encourage web site owners to promote your e-book we recommend 20% to 30% which is about average for software and e-books available on the eSellerate network and similar affiliate programs. You can make your e-book "EST enabled" which means that the e-book file is encoded with an affiliate web site's identification number. Affiliates can download the file and host it on their web server. When visitors to the web sites download the file and subsequently purchase it, the web site is credited with the sale and receives the percentage you have set for affiliates. We recommend that you make your e-book EST enabled since it encourages affiliates to serve as distributors of your e-book and site visitors are more inclined to click "download now and read the first xx pages free" rather than "click here to learn more" (that is, a link to another web site). Step 3: The third step is the easiest. Publish your e-book to the web by going to DeskTop Author E-book Showcase to register and upload your e-book file.
